The central western part of Istria is the area between resort town Poreč and the Adriatic fishing port Rovinj. Poreč is touristic with plenty of day and evening activities, most water related around its mostly rocky beaches. It is however a great place to be with plenty of attractions and interesting spots. Highlights in town are the huge UNESCO protected Euphrasian Basilica, the Porec Tower and the old city center Marafor with its Roman temples and ancient Roman street layouts Decumanus Maximus and Cardo Maximus.
Rovinj is a picturesque village with great shopping near Carrera, the great Balbi Arch town gate and its beautiful old city center. One of its not to be missed highlights is a visit to the Church of Saint Euphemia with its striking Venetian bell tower located at the highest point on Rovinj's peninsula. Other sights nearby worth exploring are the medieval Castle of Pazin and the beautiful Lim Valley of the river Pazincica also called Limska Draga, Lim Fjord or Lim Channel. You can visit historic towns such as Saint Lovrec, Motovun, Groznjan or visit Istria's only geological monument the Beradine Cave.
Poreč is one of the most popular beach resort towns in Croatia, with thousands of tourists each year, with plenty of wreck dives offshore and islands in the vicinity. One of the reason for scuba divers to visit Rovinj is because it is the nearest location of the famous wreck the Baron Gautsch. She was a passage liner built in Austria that sank fully loaded with passengers in 1914 when it struck a mine. The Rovinj archipelago located just offshore Rovinj consists out of 19 islets. Two Sisters or Dvije Sestrice is known by bird spotters as a nesting site for seagulls. The two nearby islands Crveni Otok and Katarina also offer pretty dive sites and great underwater topology. The shores of Istria are of outstanding natural beauty with great secluded beaches, pretty bays, authentic Greek villages and warm tropical waters with excellent marine life and scuba diving dive sites.
