Split is the second largest town in Croatia and its location has made it one of Croatia's prime ports, as early as Roman times. Its harbor is busy with ferries leaving and arriving from Italy and most Dalmatian islands, including Korcula, Vis, Lastovo, Brac, Solta and Hvar. That's why this area attracts so many tourists and why Split is used as a gateway for beautiful sights and highlights in the region. Split's old town offers plenty of ruins and picturesque squares. It is mainly known for the Diocletian's Palace, nowadays a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but built as the mansion of Emperor Diocletian. Well known sights inside the palace are its famous Peristile and old cathedral.
Besides these archeological and historic interesting spots there are also its stunning surroundings and beautiful beaches. The islands Brac, Hvar and Solta are easily reached, all providing for a relaxed and beautiful holiday. A trip to the Pakleni Islands and its secluded coves and warm waters offers fantastic daytrips to relax, swim and dive. The many central Dalmatian Islands nearby Split with its warm Adriatic Sea provide for excellent scuba diving and a rich underwater marine world.
