Vis Island, located far out the coast of Dalmatia, Croatia, is the last major island before entering the Italian Adriatic Sea. Vis Town has a picturesque old part called Kut, you can explore the Issa Museum (Roman city of Issa), there is a Franciscan monastery or you can take a look at the huge bronze head of Aphrodite. To the northeast of Vis Town is Stoncica Bay, one of the most beautiful bays on Vis with some nice restaurants and private bungalows. The islands' largest beach Zaglav, 10km south of Vis Town near the village Milna, is remote, secluded and most easily reached by yacht from the sea. Komiza is a traditional fishing village on the west coast known as starting point for trips towards the caves on Bisevo Island. Most of its interior is transformed into vineyards resulting in the local famous white wine Vugava and the red wine Opol and Plavac. You can also find palm trees, fertile valleys and sand dunes; there are Roman ruins, Greek temples and churches out of the early modern ages.
Vis, a military base of Yugoslavia until 1989, is a relatively new tourist location; slightly further off the coast, but as brilliant and beautiful as settled holiday destinations. There are rocky coasts, pretty bays and crystal clear waters housing a wide variety of marine life. Several wrecks such as the cargo ship Vassilos T and the world famous passenger cargo liner Brioni are waiting on the ocean floor to be explored by scuba divers. The bottom composition of limestone is such that plenty of caves and caverns have appeared, known by scuba divers are the wicked caverns Zelena špilja (Green Cave) and Modra špilja (Blue Cave). Whether you are based in Vis itself or on islands nearby, you can find diving clubs that will take you out for some fantastic dives.
